Catfish Species |
| Catfish are a diverse group of bony
fish They are named for their common
characteristic of barbels that resemble the whiskers
of a cat. Most catfish are bottom feeders. In
general, they are negatively buoyant, which means that
they will usually sink rather than float due to a
reduced gas bladder and a heavy, bony head. Catfish
have a variety of body shapes, though most have a
cylindrical body with a flattened ventrum (belly) to
allow for benthic feeding. All Catfish species
belong to the Order Siluriformes. There are currently
37 known Catfish families. Catfish species live
in freshwater and are found on every continent except
for Antarctica. There are also a few Catfish
species that live in saltwater |

Buffalo Species |
| Freshwater fish known as buffalo fish
are sometimes mistaken for carp because of their flat
face and large, silver scales running along the body,
though it lacks the whisker-like mouth appendages
common to carp. Buffalo fish live in most types
of freshwater bodies where panfish are found, such as
ponds, creeks, rivers, and lakes. From a
fishermen's point of view, however, the buffalo fish
is not a popular game fish because it is difficult to
catch. Yet, once on the line, it can put up a good
fight. It is distributed from the Red River of
the North Canada to the Ohio River and south in the
Mississippi River system to Texas and Alabama in the
United States. It lives in sluggish areas of large
rivers and shallow lakes |

PErch and Perch-like Species |
| Perciformes or perch like fish has the
largest number of species with the greatest variety of
any other order of fish. Oddly enough the white
perch is not a true perch but is, rather, a fish of
the temperate bass family Moronidae, notable as a food
and game fish in eastern North America. Perch
are a popular panfish and are considered to be very
good eating. They can be caught with a variety
of methods, but the two best methods are perhaps float
fishing and lure fishing. Spinners work exceptionally
well. When Float Fishing, the angler will want to have
a disgorger at all times; Perch are notorious for
swallowing the hook, and will need aid of a disgorger
or forceps for unhooking. In many parts of the world
they are also a favorite species among ice fishermen.
They will take a variety of baits, including minnows,
worms, maggots, bread and softshell crayfish |

BAss
species |
| Bass is a name shared by many different
species of popular game fish. The term encompasses both
freshwater and marine species. All belong to the large
order Perciformes, or perch-like fishes. Except for
white bass and striped bass, freshwater bass are of the
sunfish family. All have a single dorsal fin with spines
in the forward section. All build nests which the male
protects. Most are native to the eastern half of the US
but have been distributed to waters all across the US. Bass feed primarily on smaller fish
and on crawfish but also eat eels, frogs, shrimp, small
crabs, and have even been known to eat small birds and
mice. Bass are caught on a wide assortment of baits.
Here is a list of some - spinner baits, spoons, plastic
worms, jigs, crank-baits, and jerk baits |

Pan
fish
species |
| The average angler has spent a lot of time
catching some of the interesting panfish species of fish.
Rather it be trolling for crappies or catching big
bluegill with crickets or wax worms you have grown fond of
catching these tasty fish. Crappie and blue gill
once they have reached maturity are usually no longer the
tiny irritating fish that robs your hook like a crook
picking a lock. Crappie can grow in access of 18
inches and bluegills can weigh as much as 1.5 lbs.
Once you catch the premium specimens of these species you
will be hooked. All are members of the perciformes such as
bass and other perch like species. There are two
basic types of crappies and many variations of bluegills
and sunfish. The most rewarding part of angling for
these fish is the quality of food fare you can place on
your table. If you have not done so in awhile go out and
do some panfishing, you may see why so many anglers have
gone panfish crazy. |
